Many people assume the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is all about politics so is it worth spending any time there. The ACT is based on Australian National Government but if you can forget the politics of the day and put yourself into tourist mode there is a lot to see and do to fill in many days.
Of course a visit and tour through both the old and new parliament houses is a must and an eye opener to the grandeur of the new parliament house and how Australia’s parliament really functions.
With the political theme aside a complete change of thought process is a visit to the deep space station followed by a visit to the arboretum are venues that some do not associate with the ACT. Some might say ‘arboretum - how boring’ but we feel this is one of the best we have seen throughout Australia since we have been travelling. It has some very unusual bonsai plants on display and even if this is not your interest they need to be seen. Follow all this with a snack or meal in the cafe while appreciating the scenic views.
After taking in the landscape around Lake Burley Griffin a visit to the Royal Australian Mint or the National Museum of Australia as well as the National Gallery of Australia can easily fill in a day of adventuring. If you have any spare time a tour through the Australian Institute of Sport to watch the athletes train and the technical aspects of the training of the various sports.
Back on the culture theme a tour through the High court of Australia is an educational boost to the legal system of Australia. However the highlight for us has to be the Australian War Memorial. Here you can spend hours or days wandering through the many galleries of amazing displays that you need to see and should be on every ones bucket list.
