After the ACT Victoria has the highest population density of all the Australian states and territories which is evident as you travel the state as it is not far in any direction to the next town or city. Even though it is the third smallest state and territory in area it has some amazing variety including the Snowy mountains, southern coastal regions, lush agricultural areas, the fruit and wine areas along the mighty Murray River and of course the history.
We like to experience the vibrancy of Melbourne and the ease of getting around the city when we visit with the tram and train network weather we are going to the annual flower and garden show, the national rose garden at Werribee, the Lume which is the worlds largest digital art gallery, one of the theatres for world class stage performances, or just visiting the city, South Bank or Saint Kilda.
For us one of our favourite Australian rivers has to be Murray River and we have followed the Murray from the Hume Dam to the mouth of the Murray River in South Australia with our favourite of the Murray River towns being Echuca. In Echuca you can not only read about the history but actually experience the history by cruising on a number of paddle steamers, some of which are the oldest paddle steamers left in the world, from the original partly restored port.
Victoria also has some amazing coastal fishing and surfing towns and beaches but for us Queenslanders some can be a little chilly. The Great Ocean Road has some fantastic coastal scenery such as the Twelve Apostles however depending on the weather it can be a little windy.
To continue west from the Great Ocean Road through Warrnambool to one of our favourites of Portland, Victorias first permanent European settlement, is well worth the drive for the history, natural beauty and outdoor adventures.
There are many country towns and cities to explore however our favourites have to be Ballarat and Bendigo. Ballarat with the history of the Eureka Stockade, Sovereign Hill and the newer Buddhist Temple to start our exploring makes it a must to visit. We have visited Bendigo on a number of occasions to start with for the history and attractions however we were repeatedly enticed back when we found an amazing Italian restraurant.
